Did the comic or the TV show ever explain why walkers form a herd?

In the animal kingdom, herds or flocks or packs are social groups. The walkers don't socialize with each other...they are more like blindly following. So it's more like a school of fish or a flock of geese? The leading one or few are not designated "leaders" but just happen to be in the leading position, and where they turn will cause other members to turn by instinct?

If that is the case, they don't need to use sound to divert a herd of walkers. They just smear blood and guts over themselves and walk up to the front, and just walk where they want the herd to follow. Have someone start a circle of forest fire, and lead the entire herd into it.

Furthermore, they know for some reason, walkers can tell who's alive and who's undead.

The walkers don't attack each other. They already figured it out by smearing blood and guts over themselves to blend into groups of walkers and stay safe.

Not just any blood and guts, it has to be the undead's blood and guts. The fresh blood and guts will draw the walkers to eat them.

With so much time passed, no one has sat down and figured out what exactly is the ingredient in those undead's blood and guts that repels other walkers? If you can figure that out, they can perhaps synthesize it or at least harvest it and make clothes with it. That way as long as they are wearing these clothes they can safety walk amongst walkers.
