There is some buzz swirling around Rick's death and people curious about the big jump, but I don't think this will create any significant increase over last week's episode. I will go with 5.61 million.

Closest guesser gets a labradoodles named Gregorny!

I don’t understand why we refer to the number of viewers as “ratings.” A rotten tomatoes or IMDb score makes more sense to be called a rating because something is actually being rated. This is just glorified bean counting.

Having said that, I’ll go with 4.57 million.

It is because for many decades, the word ratings was referring to the number of viewers. It ties directly to how much advertising revenue a show can make. No adverting that I know of is based off IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Still, it’s the wrong word, since nothing is actually being “rated.” I know we use the term wrongly and it’s become standard usage, but we still have critics’ ratings and audience ratings, so there’s that. A program can have six million viewers on a weekly basis and still be a shit show.

I had assumed "Guess the ratings" meant the neilson ratings, which relates to the millions of people watching and can even break down into precise age demographic, for the weeks show. Is this thread about something else?

No its not. The word has more than one meaning. Miriam Webster dictionary lists one meaning of the word "rating" as being "an estimated audience size".

Merriam-Webster has it WAY down the page but I suppose it’s there. I still think it’s a piss poor way of rating something. I find qualitative measurements to be much more informative. To each their own.

No it counts. You’ve made your point, Neuro. I still think it’s a misguided meaning of the word “rating” but I imagine I’m alone in that assessment.
